The fourth Trimester

Rebalance and Bloom

Here's how and why we can offer support to both mum and baby:

  • Initial Mum & Baby Comprehensive Assessment (Week 1 onwards): This crucial first session, offered at a special new-mum rate, allows our osteopaths to conduct a combined case history and assessment for both mother and baby. For mum, we'll address immediate postnatal issues like pelvic alignment, back pain, or C-section scar tissue. For baby, we'll gently assess their musculoskeletal system, identify any birth strains, and ensure they're off to the best possible start. This integrated approach ensures a holistic understanding of their connected needs.
  • Two Inclusive Check-ups & Treatments (Strategic Developmental Milestones): These follow-up sessions are strategically timed to coincide with key developmental milestones for the baby and crucial recovery points for the mother in the first year. We'll combine the check-ups, charging for only one person to offer exceptional value.
    • Session 2 (e.g., around 3-4 months):

Within the first four months of life, a newborn undergoes a remarkable transformation, rapidly developing new skills and abilities. This period is a critical time for growth across all developmental domains: social and emotional, language and communication, cognitive, and physical. While every baby develops at their own unique pace, there are several key milestones that typically begin to appear before they reach four months of age.

Social and Emotional Milestones: Connecting with Their World

One of the most heartwarming developments is the emergence of a baby's social personality. By four months, you can expect to see:

  • The Social Smile: This isn't just a reflex; it's a genuine smile in response to your own.
  • Making Eye Contact: Your baby will start to gaze into your eyes, a crucial part of bonding.
  • Expressing Happiness: You may notice coos, gurgles, and happy wiggles when they are content.
  • Attempting to Get Your Attention: They might cry, fuss, or make sounds to let you know they want you.
  • Calming with a Familiar Voice or Touch: Your presence and comfort become increasingly effective in soothing them.

Language and Communication: Finding Their Voice

Long before they can speak, babies are learning the fundamentals of communication. In these early months, look for:

  • Cooing and Gurgling: These are the first delightful sounds your baby will make, often starting around two months.
  • Turning Towards Sounds: Your baby will begin to turn their head towards the sound of your voice or other interesting noises.
  • Vocalizing in Response: They will start to "talk" back to you, making sounds when you speak to them.
  • Different Cries: You may begin to distinguish different cries for hunger, sleepiness, or discomfort.

Cognitive Development: Learning and Exploring

A baby's brain is working hard to make sense of the world around them. Key cognitive milestones include:

  • Following Objects with Their Eyes: They will start to track moving objects and people.
  • Showing Interest in Faces: Faces, particularly those of their primary caregivers, will become a major source of fascination.
  • Recognizing Familiar People and Objects at a Distance: You might notice them getting excited when they see a familiar face from across the room.
  • Bringing Hands to Mouth: This is a primary way babies begin to explore their own bodies and the world.
  • Showing Boredom: If an activity goes on for too long, they might get fussy or cry, indicating they are ready for a change of pace.

Physical and Motor Development: Gaining Control

Your baby's physical strength and coordination will increase significantly during this time. Watch for these motor skill developments:

  • Head Control: They will gradually be able to hold their head up for longer periods, especially during "tummy time."
  • Smoother Movements: The jerky, random movements of a newborn will start to become more fluid and purposeful.
  • Pushing Up on Elbows: During tummy time, they will begin to push up on their forearms.
  • Bringing Hands Together: They will discover their hands and may bring them together in front of them.
  • Grasping Objects: While still reflexive at first, they will start to briefly hold onto a toy or your finger.
  • Batting at Objects: Dangling toys will become a source of entertainment as they begin to bat at them with their hands.

It is important to remember that these are general guidelines, and there is a wide range of what is considered normal development.

  • Session 3 (e.g., around 6-9 months):

Between the ages of six and nine months, your baby will transform from a stationary infant into a curious and mobile little person. This period is marked by significant advancements in their physical abilities, cognitive understanding, and social interactions. While every baby develops at their own unique pace, here are the key developmental milestones you can expect to see during this exciting stage.

Physical Development: On the Move

This is a time of incredible growth in your baby's strength and coordination. Their newfound mobility will keep you on your toes.

  • Sitting Independently: They will likely master sitting up without support, freeing up their hands to explore.
  • Getting Mobile: Many babies begin to crawl during this time. This can range from the classic hands-and-knees crawl to scooting on their bottom or a "commando" crawl on their belly.
  • Pulling to Stand: Towards the end of this period, many babies will start to pull themselves up to a standing position using furniture for support.
  • Improved Hand-Eye Coordination: They will become adept at passing objects from one hand to the other. You will also notice the emergence of the "pincer grasp," where they use their thumb and forefinger to pick up small items.
  • Oral Exploration: Everything they can get their hands on will likely end up in their mouth as they use it as a primary way to explore textures and shapes. Teething may also begin during this time.

Cognitive Development: Understanding the World

Your baby's brain is making new connections at a rapid pace, leading to a greater understanding of cause and effect and the world around them.

  • Object Permanence: They are beginning to understand that objects and people still exist even when they can't see them. This can lead to fun games of peek-a-boo and a desire to find hidden toys.
  • Exploring with Purpose: Their play will become more intentional. They will enjoy banging objects together, shaking toys that make noise, and dropping things to see what happens.
  • Responding to Their Name: They will likely turn their head and look at you when you call their name.
  • Understanding "No": While they may not always obey, they will start to understand the meaning of "no."

Language and Communication: Finding Their Voice

While they are not yet talking, your baby's communication skills are developing in leaps and bounds.

  • Babbling: You will hear a lot of "ma-ma," "da-da," and "ba-ba" as they practice making consonant and vowel sounds. This is a crucial step towards forming words.
  • Imitating Sounds: They will try to copy the sounds and tones of your voice, engaging in back-and-forth "conversations."
  • Using Gestures: They will start to use gestures to communicate, such as raising their arms to be picked up or waving "bye-bye."
  • Responding to Sounds: They will turn their head to locate the source of a sound and will show interest in music and everyday noises.

Social and Emotional Development: Forming Bonds

Your baby's personality will become more apparent as they form stronger attachments and learn to express a wider range of emotions.

  • Stranger Anxiety: It is common for babies in this age range to become wary or fearful of unfamiliar people. They may cling to you and cry when approached by a stranger.
  • Separation Anxiety: They may become upset when you leave the room as they now understand you are gone.
  • Expressing Emotions: You will see clear expressions of happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise. They will laugh and squeal when happy and may show frustration when they can't have something they want.
  • Enjoys Social Play: Games like peek-a-boo and patty-cake will be a source of delight. They will also enjoy looking at themselves in a mirror.

It is important to remember that these milestones are general guidelines.

  •  This period often sees baby beginning to sit unsupported, crawl, or even pull to stand. We can assess their developing motor skills, spinal curves, and any areas of tension that might hinder movement. For mum, we can continue to support her physical recovery, address any new aches from lifting a heavier baby, and provide guidance on ergonomic practices as her baby becomes more active.

This integrated approach provides continuity of care, addressing the evolving needs of both mother and baby as they navigate the remarkable first year together. It's a truly invaluable part of her recovery journey and a nurturing investment in both their well-being.
