Stop guessing. Start measuring.

Whether your goal is better health, staying strong for life or finding your extra 1%, you need to know your starting point. Our assessment combines medical, clinical and sports-science grade equipment with clear reporting and education, so you understand how your body is really performing and can take charge of it. Here's what we test, what it means, and why it matters.

Part one

The six tests

Non-invasive, no needles, around 45 minutes in total.

Medical, clinical & sports-science grade equipment: Tanita MC-780MA · AGE Reader · 12-lead ECG · Frontier X2 · Spirometry · VALD ForceDecks

Body composition

Tanita Segmental

The Tanita MC-780MA is a clinical-grade, multi-frequency body composition analyser. You stand on it and hold two handles — it takes about 30 seconds.

Your bathroom scalesOne number for your whole body, usually from your feet alone.
Our TanitaEight electrodes and multiple frequencies — measuring each arm, each leg and your trunk separately.

What it measures

Muscle mass — each limbLeft vs right arm and leg, plus trunk. Spots imbalances after injury or from favouring one side.
Fat mass & body fat %Overall, and where it sits in your body.
Visceral fatThe fat stored deep around your organs — the type most linked to health risk.
Body waterTotal water, and the balance inside and outside your cells — linked to hydration, inflammation and recovery.
Phase angleA marker of how healthy your cells are and the quality of your muscle tissue.
Bone mass, BMR & metabolic ageEstimated bone mineral, the calories you burn at rest, and how your metabolism compares with your age.

Why it matters

Two people can weigh exactly the same and be in very different health. Muscle naturally declines from around the age of 30 — a process called sarcopenia — and it protects your metabolism, your joints and your independence later in life. Tracking it, limb by limb, lets us target the right changes, such as strength training and protein intake. For athletes, segmental lean mass and phase angle help track how you are adapting to and recovering from training.

Before your test: avoid a large meal or lots of fluid for 2–3 hours. Not suitable if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or are pregnant.
Metabolic health

Autofluorescence Scan

A painless light scan of your forearm using the AGE Reader, measuring tissue advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that reflect dietary and metabolic impact.

What it measures

Skin AGE levelHow much has built up, compared with the average for your age.
BodyAge estimateThe age at which an average person has the same level as you.

Why it matters

AGEs build up in your tissues over time and are strongly shaped by diet, blood sugar and lifestyle. A lower score generally reflects healthier ageing. Whole foods, regular exercise and steady blood sugar all help keep them down — supporting your long-term metabolic health.

Before your test: keep your forearms free of creams, sunscreen and fake tan on the day.
Heart

12-lead ECG

A resting electrocardiogram that records the electrical activity of your heart while you lie still.

What it measures

Resting heart rateHow many times your heart beats each minute at rest.
Electrical timingsHow quickly the signal travels through your heart and resets between beats (PR, QRS, QTc).

Why it matters

A lower resting heart rate usually reflects better cardiovascular fitness — and cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health. This baseline helps us design training that is both safe and effective for you — from gentle Zone 2 work to high-intensity intervals.

Please note: this is a baseline for exercise planning, not a diagnostic heart check. If anything needs additional checking, we'll explain it and advise you of the next step.
Recovery & stress

HRV with Frontier X2

A lightweight chest strap you wear for around 30 minutes while the rest of your assessment takes place.

What it measures

Heart rate variability (HRV)The tiny changes in time between each heartbeat.
Heart rate responseHow your heart rate rises and settles as you move between tests.

Why it matters

A healthy heart doesn't tick like a metronome. Higher HRV generally means your nervous system is adaptable and recovering well; lower HRV can reflect stress, poor sleep, illness or overtraining. It's a window into recovery for everyone — and a key tool for athletes deciding when to push and when to back off.

Before your test: avoid caffeine and hard exercise beforehand, as both affect HRV.
Lungs

Spirometry & SpO2

You take a deep breath and blow out as hard and fast as you can into a mouthpiece, repeated a few times for accuracy. We also take a quick reading of your blood oxygen.

What it measures

FVCThe total amount of air you can breathe out.
FEV1How much you can breathe out in the first second.
Lung ageHow your lung function compares with the average for your age.
SpO2Blood oxygen saturation: how well your lungs and circulation deliver oxygen to your body.

Why it matters

Lung function naturally declines with age, and is closely linked to long-term health and how easily you cope with everyday exertion. For athletes, it shows whether breathing could be limiting your endurance. Like every test here, it's a baseline. If anything needs additional checking, we'll advise you of the next step.

Before your test: avoid smoking for at least an hour and a heavy meal for 2 hours. Let us know if you've recently had chest, abdominal or eye surgery, or a recent heart problem.
Power & balance

Force Plates

Highly sensitive platforms that measure the forces you push into the ground as you stand, squat and jump.

What it measures

Peak powerHow much force you can produce, and how quickly.
Left/right asymmetryHow evenly you share the load between your two legs.

Why it matters

Many people assume losing balance is just part of getting older — but it's often linked to weakness or poor movement patterns that can be trained. Force plates reveal hidden compensations, like leaning on one leg — and alongside your Tanita limb-by-limb results, show whether a weaker side has less muscle, less power, or both — so we can correct them before they lead to joint strain, poor balance or falls. For athletes, the same data shows jump power and left/right differences that can limit performance and are often linked to injury.

What to wear: comfortable clothes and trainers you can squat and move in.
VO2max
Bringing it together

Your calculated VO2 max

VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. It's one of the strongest predictors of long-term health and longevity — and the number longevity experts and athletes care about most.

Measuring it directly means running to complete exhaustion while wearing a mask — not appropriate or necessary for most people. Instead, we calculate yours from the data gathered during your assessment. Because we use the same calculation each time, it's ideal for tracking how your fitness improves.

"It isn't enough simply to exercise. You need to understand why — that's what turns a test result into a habit that lasts."

— John Evans, Osteopath
