Return to sport
Get back to your sport with a plan and real numbers, not just a feeling that it’s probably OK.

After an injury, pain usually settles before strength, power and control have fully returned. Going back too soon is one of the common reasons injuries come back, and a repeat injury can keep you out for longer.
Professional clubs use objective tests to help decide when a player is ready to return. We use the same kind of equipment here in Chudleigh, so you get a clear picture of where you are and what’s left to do.
What we test
- Jump power and push-off, and how evenly you share the effort between your legs
- Landing control: how well you absorb force when you land
- Single-leg strength and balance, comparing your injured side with your uninjured side
- Movement quality: how you squat, lunge and land, and whether you’re protecting one side
Testing uses VALD ForceDecks force plates. Read how force plate testing works.
Who it’s for
Runners, rugby and football players, hockey, netball and cricket players, gym and CrossFit athletes, and anyone with a sport or activity they want to get back to. Common reasons people come to us include ankle sprains, hamstring, calf and groin strains, knee injuries, and shoulder problems in throwing and contact sports.
How it works
A clear route from injury back to playing.
Assess and plan
We look at your injury, your sport and your goals, take your starting measures and agree a rehab plan with milestones.
Rehab and re-test
Hands-on treatment and progressive, sport-specific exercise, with re-tests along the way so you can see the gap closing.
Return with a plan
When your tests and your sport-specific work are where they need to be, we agree a graded return to training and matches.
For clubs and teams
We can run pre-season testing for your squad, give injured players a clear route back, and share results with your coaches. Testing takes about 15 minutes per player and costs from £30 per player, with a minimum of 8 players. We can test at our clinic, or at your club for squads of 15 or more, and your coach gets a results sheet within a week. Our team’s experience includes university teaching and professional football and rugby. Email us or call 07902 065739 to talk about what would suit your club.
Concussion and urgent problems
Return to sport after a concussion must follow your sport’s graduated return-to-play guidance and medical advice. We don’t clear players to return after a concussion. If you have a suspected fracture, a joint that has dislocated, or can’t bear weight after an injury, get same-day advice from NHS 111 or go to A&E.

Questions about returning to sport
Do I need to be injured to come?
No. Some athletes and clubs book testing before the season starts. It shows strengths and weaknesses to work on, and gives you a record to compare against if you’re injured later.
Can you work with my coach or club?
Yes. With your permission, we’re happy to share your plan and test results with your coach, club physio or strength and conditioning coach, so everyone is working towards the same goal.
I’ve had surgery. Can I still come?
Yes, once your surgeon or hospital team is happy for you to start rehab. We’ll work alongside their guidance and agree milestones with you.
What does it cost?
If you’re having treatment with us, force plate testing is included in your normal appointments whenever it’s needed. A stand-alone return to sport test, about 45 minutes with a written report, is £95. Club testing days are from £30 per player, allowing about 15 minutes each, with a minimum of 8 players. See all our fees.
Do you see young athletes?
Yes. Under-16s need a parent or guardian with them. Testing is adapted to their age and stage of development.
