Lower back pain

At Chudleigh Health Hub, we believe informed patients are empowered patients. Find out about the different types of lower back pain and how we can help.

Back pain treatment

Understanding the types of lower back pain

Knowing which type of pain you have is important for effective treatment and management.

Acute back pain

Acute lower back pain

Comes on suddenly, often after an injury or strain such as heavy lifting, an awkward movement or an accident. It can be intense and make daily activities difficult. Recognising the symptoms early helps you get the right treatment sooner.

Chronic back pain

Chronic lower back pain

Lasts more than three months and can come from conditions such as disc degeneration or long-term muscle strain. It’s often a constant dull ache that affects quality of life, so it needs a plan that tackles both the symptoms and the source.

Assessing the source of pain

Referred lower back pain

Felt in the lower back but coming from elsewhere, such as kidney stones, endometriosis or digestive problems. That’s why an accurate diagnosis matters, and we’ll refer you on if your pain isn’t coming from your back.

Rehabilitation

Recognising symptoms and getting treatment

Each type of lower back pain has its own symptoms and challenges. Our team is dedicated to giving you a treatment plan tailored to your specific type of pain.

Osteopathic treatment explained

Our osteopaths assess and treat a wide range of muscle and joint problems, with a particular focus on lower back pain. From palpation and stretching to manipulation and other techniques, each part of treatment is chosen to help you recover and get moving again.

Our aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence to take control of your recovery.

Techniques we use

We use evidence-based hands-on techniques alongside exercise, and always explain what we’re doing and why.

Osteopath treating the spine

Spinal manipulation

A gentle, controlled movement of a spinal joint to reduce stiffness and ease pain, helping you move more freely.

Soft tissue treatment

Soft tissue therapy

Work on muscles, tendons and ligaments, including deep tissue massage and myofascial release, to ease tension and help you relax.

Joint mobilisation

Joint mobilisation

Passive, rhythmical movements that restore normal joint movement and reduce stiffness, especially helpful for long-standing pain.

Rehabilitation exercise

Rehabilitation exercises

A personalised programme to strengthen your core, improve posture and help prevent the problem coming back.

When to get urgent help

Osteopathy isn’t the right first step if you have:

  • Numbness around your genitals or bottom
  • Difficulty passing urine or controlling your bladder or bowels
  • Weakness in both legs or problems walking

These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome. Go to A&E or call 999 straight away.
