1. Initial mum and baby consultation, from week one

We set aside time for a detailed conversation about you and your baby: your health before, during and after pregnancy, and any pain, discomfort or worries you have about yourself or your new baby. We then assess and treat you both. Sometimes that’s helping with minor niggles, and sometimes it’s something that needs more attention, but whatever the problem, we’ll help you get on the right path. For mum, that might be pelvic or back pain, or a caesarean scar. For baby, it’s a gentle check of how they’re moving after birth.

2. Around 3 to 4 months

This often lines up with your baby developing head control and starting to push up. We can look at feeding difficulties, tummy time challenges or any imbalance in how they hold themselves. For mum, it’s a key time to check core strength, ease lingering aches from carrying and feeding, and support your return to activity.

Typical milestones before 4 months

Every baby develops at their own pace, and there’s a wide range of normal. These are general guidelines.

Social and emotional

  • A real social smile in response to yours
  • Making eye contact
  • Cooing, gurgling and happy wriggles
  • Crying or fussing to get your attention
  • Calming to a familiar voice or touch

Language and communication

  • Cooing and gurgling, often from around two months
  • Turning towards sounds and voices
  • Making sounds back when you talk
  • Different cries for hunger, tiredness or discomfort

Thinking and learning

  • Following moving objects and people with their eyes
  • Fascination with faces
  • Recognising familiar people from a distance
  • Bringing hands to mouth
  • Getting fussy when bored

Movement

  • Holding their head up for longer, especially during tummy time
  • Smoother, more purposeful movements
  • Pushing up on forearms during tummy time
  • Bringing hands together
  • Briefly grasping a toy or your finger
  • Batting at dangling toys

3. Between 6 and 9 months

Your baby may be starting to sit, crawl or pull to stand. We can check how their movement skills are developing and look for any areas of tension that might be holding them back. For mum, we continue to support your recovery, help with new aches from lifting a heavier baby, and give practical advice on lifting and carrying as your baby gets more active.

Typical milestones from 6 to 9 months

Your baby changes from a stationary infant into a curious, mobile little person. These are general guidelines.

Movement

  • Sitting without support
  • Getting mobile: crawling, bottom-shuffling or commando crawling
  • Pulling up to stand using furniture
  • Passing objects between hands and starting a pincer grasp
  • Exploring everything with their mouth, and teething may begin

Thinking and learning

  • Understanding that things still exist when out of sight
  • Purposeful play: banging, shaking and dropping things
  • Responding to their name
  • Starting to understand “no”

Language and communication

  • Babbling “ma-ma”, “da-da” and “ba-ba”
  • Copying sounds and tones in back-and-forth “conversations”
  • Using gestures like raising arms or waving
  • Turning towards sounds and enjoying music

Social and emotional

  • Wariness of strangers
  • Upset when you leave the room
  • Clear happiness, sadness, anger and surprise
  • Loving games like peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake

This joined-up approach gives continuity of care for both of you through the first year. If you have concerns about your baby’s development, your health visitor or GP is the right first contact, and we’re happy to work alongside them.

Care isn’t just physical. We also offer guidance to support your emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and after birth, and help you find the right support if you need it.

Baby development

Understanding developmental milestones

Milestones help parents and health professionals understand how a child’s physical, cognitive and social development is going. Every child is unique, and regular check-ups give you insight and guidance at each stage.

We believe in supporting parents with knowledge, building health autonomy for the whole family from the very beginning.

Supporting you after birth

Becoming a mum brings its own set of challenges. Recovery from childbirth is about physical healing, and also about your emotional wellbeing and the bond with your new baby.

Our osteopaths provide tailored support for both physical discomfort and the stresses of early parenthood, using gentle techniques to support your recovery. Along with relief from common postnatal aches, we aim to help you build the confidence and strength to enjoy motherhood fully.

When to get urgent help

Osteopathy isn’t the right first step if you have:

  • Vaginal bleeding, severe tummy pain or a change in your baby’s movements
  • A severe headache, vision changes or sudden swelling of your face, hands or feet
  • A baby who is unusually floppy, not feeding, has a high temperature or is struggling to breathe

Contact your midwife, maternity unit or NHS 111 straight away, or call 999 in an emergency.
